Oxygen absorbers ATCO, RP and RP-K

Typical applications:

  • 1. Anoxic disinfestations:
At oxygen levels of <0,3% all insects at any stage of development are killed within several weeks (ap. 4 weeks at 25°C). Objects to be treated are hermetically sealed in oxygen barrier film along with a proper amount of oxygen absorbers.
  • 2. Conservation of metals: Corrosion of metals is practically halted, even in humid and salt infested conditons, as it is the case with fresh archaeological finds which must not be dried. Anoxic enviroment protects organic remains from bio-degradation. So conditions inside the bag are quite similar to conditions inside the ground.
With RP-A, fresh metal surfaces and electronic parts can be maintained free from corrosion for many years.
  • 3. Conservation of products sensitive to oxygen (food, rubber, plastics, greases...)
ATCO oxygen scavengers are all safe for contact with food. These scavengers are being used in large quantities for the conservation of cereals, cookies etc.).
In museums it is used for example for the conservation of rubber, which by no other means can be stored effectively over long periods. Many plastics also profit from low-oxygen atmospheres. Benefit to textiles, paper or film materials however is relatively small: other degradation mechanisms like hydrolysis are far more important.

ATCO

ATCO oxygen scavengers reduce oxygen concentration within a sealed container to below 0,01%, creating a very low-oxygen environment. Large containers like anoxic tents can be flushed with nitrogen before introducing the oxygen scavenger (see our product line anoxic disinfestations).

ATCO sachets contain fine iron powder covered with sea salt impregnated with a NaCl-solution. One sachet of ATCO FTM 1000 absorbs 1000 ml oxygen (the oxygen from 5 l air) and releases about 0,4 g of water during use. With no humidity buffer involved, ATCO creates a relative humidity of 68% RH. The release of moisture can be balanced by either 25 g pre-conditioned PRO SORB or one 2 g bag dry silica gel per sachet of Ageless FTM1000 (values deduced from Elert 2003).

ATCO FTM 1000 and M250 contain sulphur-free iron. It has been demonstrated that the normal types of ATCO and Ageless release sulphurous gases, tarnishing silver and other metals.

Calculation of quantity:

Oxygen absorption is reducing the volume of the bag by one fifth. Therefore bags or bubbles must always be prepared 20% larger, to make sure the decrease in volume won't damage the enclosure or the content.

Control:

Ageless-eye is a small oxygen indicator tablet turning pink below 0,1% oxygen and returning to blue above 0,5% oxygen. Ageless-eye can be stored 6 months in a refrigerator in a sachet containing an oxygen absorber. After more than one year of storage, the colour shift is not reliable any more.

More accurate measuring requires oxygen meters, the most versatile being GMH 3691 GOG.

Precautions:

ATCO were developed for food industry. They are non-poisonous and can be discarded after use as normal waste. The heat of the reaction elevates the temperature within the sachets up to around 42°C, so sensitive art objects should not be in direct contact with the oxygen scavenger.

nach obenOxygen scavenger RP-K: absorbs oxygen without influencing RH

Oxygen scavenger RP-K is also active under dry conditions and is absorbing oxygen without influencing relative humidity.

Furthermore it contains some active charcoal for the  adsorption of pollutants like SO2, HCl or NH3.  RP-K consists of unsaturated organic compounds and some inorganic sorbents like graphite and Ca(OH)2 as well as polythene.

nach obenOxygen scavenger RP-A: absorbs oxygen and dries (for metals, electronic components ...)

Oxygen scavenger RP-A is containing similar materials but also a very strong sorbent for humidity (zeolith), reducing relative humidity within the container to almost 0 % RH. One sachet of RP-5A absorbs around 1,1 g of water. RP-A fights against metal corrosion on three levels, reducing simultaneously oxygen, humidity and pollutants. However, for most metal objects in museums, dry storage with desiccants like silica gel or bags of molecular sieves will be sufficient to prevent corrosion.

Containers/bags:

For low-oygen storage or anoxic treatments, only sufficiently oxygen-tight containers can be used. A simple solution can be a twist-off jam pot or a preserving jar, but in most cases bags made of high-barrier films are used, like aluminium-laminates or ESCAL-film or. Oxygen permeability of the transparent ESCAL-film is as low almost as low as aluminium film. Seals should be around 8 mm large and absolutely perfect. Only the best sealing instruments will do for this purpose. We recommend Joke SZ 380-8 (photo) . You also can use the Polystar 300D which is a versatile sealer but its seals are only 3 mm wide. For long-term uses you can place 2 - 3 seals next to each other. For smaller bags, you may even use a heated spatula (180°C) or an iron (with silicone sheet or baking paper interleaved). Do some tests before you proceed to seal your bags. For example, if you seal an aluminium laminate and try to tear the two sheets apart, the seal should break along the aluminium layer and not between the PE-layers.

For smaller items or medium-term applications, pre-sealed bags are available which can be closed by special clips
